NY Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel Found Guilty of 11 Ethics Violations

NY Representative Charlie Rangel is one of the main reason why Congressmen need term limits. His countless wrongdoings are finally coming to bite him on the proverbial hind quarter.A House ethics committee subpanel found Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel guilty of 11 of the 13 charges of ethics violations against him.

Four Democrats and four Republicans composed the panel that emerged after private deliberation to announce their findings.
“This has been a difficult assignment,” committee chair Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said. “We have tried to act with fairness, led only by the facts and the law, and I believe we have accomplished that mission.”
The findings will be submitted to the full ethics committee. Then, they will schedule a public hearing in order to determine the appropriate sanctions against the New York Representative. Whatever action they decide on during the sanctions hearing will then go to the full House of Representatives. The committee could even recommend expelling Rangel. Other possible sanctions include a House vote deploring Rangel’s conduct, a fine or a denial of privileges.
But, Rangel left the trial when the panel rejected his request to delay the proceedings because he had no campaign money left to pay for a legal team after already having spent $2 million on his defense.
He released a statement blasting the decision.

“How can anyone have confidence in the decision of the Ethics Subcommittee when I was deprived of due process rights, right to counsel and was not even in the room?” he said. “I can only hope that the full Committee will treat me more fairly, and take into account my entire 40 years of service to the Congress.”
